Welcome to the Our School Plan website for the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Facilities Master Plan. You should expect updates to the site on a regular basis as we keep you informed on the progress of this important new plan for the improvement, maintenance, and long-range development of our school facilities.

A Facilities Master Plan will allow our District to conduct the kind of critical planning that has been instrumental to our past successes. Many members of our community have come together during this collaborative process, offering their expertise and creative thinking to help guide us as we look for ways to improve our existing facilities.

SMMUSD is committed to such important issues as diversity, the depth of our curriculum, a focus on the arts, an emphasis on Special Education, and the results of the redesign at Samohi. Each of these attainments has been due in large part to the people in our community who have participated in the planning for each endeavor. Certainly, we must invest this same effort into improving our facilities over the next twenty years.

Features of the Facility Master Plan (FMP)

The Planning Process for the FMP revolves around SMMUSD's 2002 Educational Strategic Plan (see Strategic Initiatives), using these educational concepts as a starting point for the entire process.

The time frame for the FMP will extend from November, 2005 to the end of June, 2007. Four community-wide monthly meetings (see Workshops) will mark a series of activities that will involve technical and physical facility examination, community outreach meetings, and communications to all community members through this website, monthly newsletters, and a DVD video which will be given out free to community members as well as be available online.

In addition, online and paper surveys will gauge the interest of SMMUSD teachers, students, administrators, and community members. Community surveys will be sent to an email list created via sign-ups on this website and at the community meetings (see Surveys).

Once all of the community information is gathered, the Project Team will make two presentations of its findings to the school board beginning in early March, 2007 (see Presentations). One presentation will provide discussion issues and tentative plans for action. The second Presentation will focus on the final draft before adoption by the school board. In between these two meetings, the Project Team will visit each school site and talk with the Principal of each school to help finalize plans for that site.

As information is gathered for each school, community members may check this website under the School Sites link to discover specific information about each of the schools. Furthermore, as the Facilities Master Plan draws toward conclusion, the Measure BB link will provide information for the transition to specific focus on the $268 million bond issuance and such procedures as the formation of the Proposition 39 Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee and the Measure BB Advisory Committee.

Throughout the process, this website will provide support by creating a list of resources, sometimes web links, but often in the form of Adobe Acrobat files that you can access (see Resources). Also, at the resources link, the Project Team may be contacted for questions and answers. Finally, the website will track a selected list of public commentary on the process (see News Links).

To read PDF files you will need a copy of the (free) Acrobat Reader.
